What is it?

This test assesses the function, size, and shape of your thyroid gland.

What do I need to do?

Please bring a valid OHIP Card to your appointment. If you do not have an OHIP Card, please bring another form of government issued ID such as (Drivers License, Passport, or another provincial health card). Please also bring a signed requisition from your physician and arrive 15 minutes before your appointment to check in. The receptionist will verify your information and admit you for the procedure.

You must stop taking any hyperthyroid medication for 1 week prior to your test.

You must stop taking any hypothyroid medication for 4 weeks prior to your test.

Please consult your physician before discontinuing any medication.

What can I expect the day of the test?

Arrive 15 minutes early to allow the reception team to check you in for your procedure. Your technologist will then bring you into the nuclear medicine suite and conduct a brief patient interview to determine specifics about the reason for your visit. On the first day of your thyroid uptake and scan procedure, your technologist will give you a pill that contains a small amount of radioactive tracer. On the second day, your technologist will measure your thyroid to determine its uptake. Also on the second day, your technologist will inject you with a small amount of radioactive tracer to image the size and shape of your thyroid gland.

How long will it take?

Day 1 of the thyroid uptake and scan procedure takes approximately 10 minutes.

Day 2 of the thyroid uptake and scan procedure takes approximately 30 minutes.
